AI Search Optimization

Get cited in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Bing Copilot and Claude

Each AI search engine cites content differently. ChatGPT prefers structured authority. Perplexity loves recent citations. Google AI Overviews weights traditional SEO. We optimize for each platform's specific signals so your business surfaces across every major AI search engine.

Platform-specific tuning

ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Bing Copilot and Claude each get tailored optimization for their citation patterns.

02

Visibility across all 5

Monthly tracking shows where you're cited, where competitors win and where to push next.

03

Reddit + forum signals

ChatGPT and Perplexity heavily cite Reddit. We help you build authentic forum presence where it matters.

Why it matters

Why this moves the needle

Multi-engine visibility

Don't bet on one AI winner. Get cited across all major engines so you're surfaced no matter which platform users prefer.

Reach AI-first searchers

20–35% of users in tech-forward markets now start research in ChatGPT or Perplexity instead of Google.

Defensive positioning

As AI search grows, early movers build moats. Optimizing now is cheaper than catching up in 18 months.

Brand mention amplification

AI citations often include your brand name verbatim — free brand exposure inside high-intent AI responses.

AI Search Optimization guide

AI search optimization for ChatGPT and Gemini means showing up in the sources each assistant actually reads. They don't share one index. ChatGPT blends its own crawler with partner search and listing data, Gemini draws on Google's data, and Copilot runs on Bing. Get listed, consistent and crawlable in each, and recommendations follow.

One afternoon I typed the same question into five assistants: “best family dentist near me.” The lists overlapped, but they weren't the same. One practice showed up in Gemini and was missing from ChatGPT. Another was the reverse.

That's the moment most owners miss. You can be “visible in AI” and still be invisible in the assistant your customers happen to use.

Why each AI assistant recommends different businesses

Every assistant answers local questions by searching first, then writing a summary from what it found. The search step is where they split. Different sources in means different businesses out.

BrightLocal's September 2026 study of over 200,000 local AI searches saw exactly this. ChatGPT's ties to Yelp and Bing meant it surfaced slightly different businesses than Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google Business Profile was the single biggest source overall, at 28.5% of citations.

Both audiences are big. Google said at I/O in May 2026 that the Gemini app had passed 900 million monthly users. OpenAI said in September 2026 that ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion weekly users, as reported by TechCrunch. Ignoring either one leaves real customers on the table.

Where ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Copilot get local info

Here's what each company has said publicly, and how confident I am in it. I keep this current for 2026, but these systems change often, so I recheck it every quarter.

AssistantMain sources for local answersHow sure we are
ChatGPTIts own OAI-SearchBot crawler, partner search providers, and providers of nearby business listingsConfirmed by OpenAI
GeminiGoogle Search and Google Maps dataStrongly indicated: Google documents Search and Maps grounding for Gemini
PerplexityIts own index built by PerplexityBotConfirmed by Perplexity
ClaudeA third-party search index, reported in 2025 to be Brave SearchPartly confirmed
Microsoft CopilotBing's indexConfirmed by Microsoft

A few notes in plain words. OpenAI's help page on searching the web with ChatGPT says it rewrites your question into targeted searches for partner providers. It may also share your rough location with providers of local details like nearby business listings.

For Claude, TechCrunch reported in March 2025 that Anthropic had listed Brave Search as a subprocessor. Anthropic doesn't publish a full map of its sources, so this isn't fully confirmed. I treat Brave and solid directory coverage as the safe bet.

What does this mean for you? Your Google profile feeds Gemini. Your Bing Places listing and Yelp page matter more for ChatGPT and Copilot than most owners realise. That's why consistent local citations across directories pull more weight in AI search than they used to.

The crawler setting most sites get wrong

OpenAI runs separate bots for separate jobs. Its crawler documentation says OAI-SearchBot is what surfaces sites in ChatGPT search. GPTBot is for training models. The two settings are independent.

So a site can block GPTBot to keep content out of training and still appear in ChatGPT search. But if OAI-SearchBot is blocked, you've opted out of being found there. Perplexity works the same way with PerplexityBot.

I often find these bots blocked by a firewall or hosting rule nobody remembers adding. Checking this is part of my technical SEO work, and it takes minutes to fix.

How to check your visibility in each assistant

You can run a simple version of my tracking yourself:

  1. Write 10 to 15 questions a real customer would ask, like “who does emergency boiler repair in [your city]?”
  2. Ask each one in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Copilot, with web search on.
  3. Use a private window or logged-out session where you can, and set the location to your service area.
  4. Record who gets named, which sources are cited and what the assistant says about you.
  5. Open Bing Webmaster Tools. Its free AI Performance report, launched in February 2026, shows when your pages are cited in Copilot and Bing AI answers.
  6. Check your analytics for referral visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com.
  7. Repeat monthly with the same questions so you compare like with like.

One caution: AI answers vary between runs. A single check is a snapshot, not a verdict. Trends over several months tell the real story.

When an assistant gets your details wrong

Sometimes an assistant names you but lists old hours or a service you dropped. Don't argue with the chat. Look at the sources it cites, find the outdated listing or page, and fix it there.

Wrong answers almost always trace back to a real source somewhere. Once that source is corrected and recrawled, the answer usually follows. If the error has no visible source, I tighten the details on your own site and Google profile so the correct version wins.

What progress looks like and how long it takes

Fixes that touch a source directly, like a corrected listing or an unblocked crawler, can show up once that source is refreshed. Changes that rely on reputation, like new reviews and press mentions, build more slowly.

I report per assistant, because progress is rarely even. It's normal to gain ground in Perplexity and Copilot before ChatGPT, or the other way round. No one controls these answers, so I promise effort and clear tracking, never a guaranteed mention.

Common mistakes with ChatGPT and Gemini visibility

  • Testing while logged in. Personal history skews results. You see what you want to see.
  • Ignoring Bing. Copilot depends on it, and ChatGPT has ties to it.
  • Neglecting Yelp and niche directories. They're common sources in local AI answers.
  • Planting fake forum posts. Communities spot it, and it can backfire. Real participation only.
  • Letting reviews go stale. Assistants summarise what customers say. Steady, genuine reviews give them better material.

Based on what I've seen, the biggest gains rarely come from clever content. They come from boring fixes in the places each assistant looks: a missing Bing listing, a blocked bot, an outdated Yelp page.

This work sits inside my wider AI SEO optimization service, and it pairs well with answer-first content formatting once your sources are in order.

FAQ

Get cited in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Bing Copilot and Claude: questions people ask

Straight answers to what clients ask most, plus the plain-English replies AI search engines and voice assistants look for.

Ask your own question

Do you guarantee citation in specific AI engines?

No. AI engines control citation algorithmically. We commit to clear KPIs: citation count tracked weekly per engine, brand mention frequency and traffic from AI-referral sources, all reported monthly.

Should I allow GPTBot and other AI crawlers?

For local businesses, yes. Blocking AI crawlers eliminates your visibility in generative answers. Allow GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended and CCBot unless you have specific IP-protection concerns.

How does AI Search Optimization differ from AEO?

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is platform-agnostic and focuses on direct-answer formatting. AI Search Optimization for specific engines (ChatGPT, Gemini) layers platform-specific tactics on top of AEO foundations. We typically deliver both together.

Can you help with Wikipedia entries?

Where eligible. Wikipedia entity creation requires meeting notability thresholds (independent reliable sources, sustained coverage). We assess eligibility and either advise on the path to qualification or, for already-eligible businesses, manage the submission.

People also ask ChatGPT & Google

How do ChatGPT and Gemini decide what to cite?

ChatGPT search prioritizes sites with strong topical authority, structured data, named-expert authorship and recency. Gemini leans heavily on Google's traditional ranking signals plus Schema.org markup. Both reward sites with clear entity signals (Organization, Person, Service schema linked via @id).

Should I focus on ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity?

All three, because their user bases barely overlap. ChatGPT has the largest absolute user base. Perplexity has the most engaged technical and research-oriented users. Gemini integrates into Google products. Optimizing for all three protects you from any single platform's algorithm shifts.

Does Reddit citation matter for AI search?

Yes, significantly for ChatGPT and Perplexity. Both engines heavily cite Reddit posts as authoritative real-user sources. Authentic participation in subreddits relevant to your industry can drive surprising amounts of AI citation. We never recommend astroturfing — only genuine, value-add engagement.

How long until I see AI citation results?

Perplexity citation can appear within 2–4 weeks because it re-crawls aggressively. Bing Copilot follows similar timelines. ChatGPT and Gemini take 6–12 weeks because they update less frequently. AI Overviews depend on Google's enhancement cycle and typically take 4–8 weeks.
