Local SEO guide

Local SEO services help a business show up when nearby customers search on Google, in Google Maps and, more and more, inside AI assistants. The work covers your Google Business Profile, your website, your reviews and your listings across the web. Done well, it turns searches like “dentist near me” into calls, bookings and walk-ins.

A few years ago, a bakery owner showed me her phone with real frustration. She had searched “bakery near me” while standing outside her own shop. Three other bakeries came up. Hers did not. She had great bread, loyal regulars and a five-star reputation offline. Google simply did not have enough signals to trust her listing.

I see that moment again and again. Good businesses lose local customers to louder ones. The fix is rarely one big trick. It is a set of small, boring jobs done in the right order. This guide walks through what actually works in 2026.

What local SEO services actually include

Local SEO is the work of proving three things to Google. You are relevant to the search. You are close enough to the searcher. You are trusted by real people. Every task in a local SEO plan supports one of those three ideas.

In practice, the work splits into five areas:

  • Google Business Profile: categories, services, hours, photos and posts. My Google Business Profile optimization service covers this in depth.
  • Website and on-page SEO: one clear page per service, local content and LocalBusiness schema.
  • Citations: the same name, address and phone number on directories like Yelp, Apple Business and Bing Places.
  • Reviews: a steady flow of fresh, honest reviews and thoughtful replies.
  • Local authority: links and mentions from your city, your industry and your community.

Why local SEO matters more in 2026

The way people find local businesses is changing fast. Here are the facts, then my take.

BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026 polled 1,002 US adults. It found that 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses. It also found that use of ChatGPT and other AI tools for local recommendations rose from 6% to 45% in one year. Google is still the biggest review platform, but its share dropped from 83% to 71%.

My opinion: this is good news for small businesses that do the basics well. AI assistants pull from the same places Google does. They read your reviews, your listings and your website. Clean, consistent local SEO now feeds both channels at once. If you want to go further on that side, my AI search optimization work builds on the same foundation.

How Google decides who ranks locally

Google is open about the basics. Its own guide to improving local ranking names relevance, distance and prominence as the main factors. It also states plainly that you cannot pay for a better local ranking.

Industry research adds detail. The Whitespark 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors report, based on a survey of 47 local search experts, ranks the primary Google Business Profile category as the top map pack factor. For local organic results, the top factor was having a dedicated page for each service.

Keep in mind that this is expert opinion, not a Google confirmation. Still, it matches what I see in real accounts. Category and service pages are often the first things I fix.

The order I run local SEO in, step by step

Order matters more than most owners think. Building links to a site with a broken profile wastes money. Here is the sequence I follow for most single-location businesses.

  1. Audit what exists. Check the profile, the website, the top competitors and any duplicate listings.
  2. Fix the Google Business Profile. Primary category, compliant business name, real hours and a complete service list.
  3. Build or repair service pages. One page per core service, with local details and schema.
  4. Clean up citations. Correct old phone numbers and addresses first, then add new listings through a structured citation building process.
  5. Start a review system. Ask every happy customer, every time, with a short link. Reply to each review in your own words.
  6. Earn local links. Sponsorships, local press, suppliers and community groups.
  7. Measure and repeat. Track calls, direction requests and geo-grid rank, then double down on what moved.

What local SEO costs in time and effort

I won't quote a single price here, because honest pricing depends on your city, your competition and how much needs fixing. What I can share is how the main options compare.

OptionBest forMain trade-off
Do it yourselfOwners with spare hours and a small, low-competition areaSlow learning curve and easy to miss guideline issues
Independent consultantSingle and multi-location businesses that want direct accessCapacity is limited, so start dates can vary
Large agencyBrands needing many channels under one contractWork is often passed to junior staff
Software onlyTeams that already know what to doTools report problems but do not fix them

Whichever route you pick, budget for consistency. Local SEO rewards months of steady work far more than one busy week.

Common local SEO mistakes I fix most often

  • Keyword stuffing the business name. Google's guidelines do not allow it, and it can lead to suspension.
  • One page for all services. A single “Services” page cannot rank for ten different searches.
  • Old phone numbers on directories. Mixed details confuse both Google and customers.
  • Copy-paste review replies. BrightLocal found that generic or templated replies put off 50% of consumers.
  • Checking rank from your own office. You will always look better there. Customers two miles away see something else.
  • Stopping after month two. Most of the gains arrive after the foundation settles.

How to choose a local SEO provider

Based on what I've seen, the best predictor of results is not the size of the team. It is whether the person doing the work understands your local market and reports in plain English. Ask any provider these questions before you sign:

  • Who will actually work on my account each week?
  • How will you measure rank across my whole service area, not just one point?
  • Can you show real results in a business like mine?
  • What will you need from me, and how often?

Real proof matters. For example, this Austin dental practice case study shows the full playbook behind a move from page 3 to the top of Google Maps, with 218% more calls. Look for that level of detail from anyone you hire.

Local SEO is not magic. It is a clear list of jobs done in the right order, then kept up every month. If you would like to know where your business stands today, I'll review your profile, website and competitors for you. Request your free local SEO audit and I'll send back a plain, prioritized plan.

FAQ

Local SEO that wins the Google Maps 3-pack: questions people ask

Straight answers to what clients ask most, plus the plain-English replies AI search engines and voice assistants look for.

Ask your own question

How is local SEO different from regular SEO?

Local SEO targets searches with local intent (near me, in [city], [service] [neighborhood]) and the Google Maps 3-pack. Regular SEO targets all organic results. Local SEO ranks both the website and the Google Business Profile, while regular SEO only ranks the website.

How long does local SEO take to show results?

Most clients see GBP movement (impressions, calls, direction requests) in 4 to 6 weeks. Map pack ranking gains for competitive terms typically land between months 3 and 6, depending on competition and review velocity.

Do you offer one-time audits or only ongoing engagements?

Both. A standalone 60-point audit with a 90-day plan starts the relationship cleanly, and many clients run the audit deliverable in-house. Ongoing engagements layer hands-on execution on top of the same audit framework.

Will I still need to run Google Ads alongside local SEO?

Ads can support the first 3 to 4 months while organic ramps. Once rankings stabilize, most clients reduce paid spend by 40 to 70 percent without losing call volume. Some keep ads on for high-margin services where the customer is actively shopping.
