Sterling Legal Partners came to me with a problem you hear from a lot of law firms. Strong reputation offline. Lawyers who get referred constantly through the local court network. Online, nearly invisible. They were not in the top 20 for any of the terms their ideal clients actually searched for.
Six months later, they ranked in the top 5 for 18 high-intent legal queries across Charlotte, North Carolina. Consultation calls doubled. Cost per lead from organic search fell 54 percent compared to their Avvo and Google Ads spend. This is the law firm SEO case study in full.
The challenge: a respected firm with a thin digital footprint
Sterling is a four-attorney family and estate law practice. The managing partner, R.S., had three concerns:
- GBP positioned generically. Listed as “Legal services” with no practice-area secondaries. The competing Charlotte firms had “Family law attorney,” “Divorce lawyer,” and “Estate planning attorney” dialed in.
- One Practice Areas page covering everything. No dedicated content for divorce, child custody, wills, trusts, or probate.
- Compliance-heavy backlink profile. Only law-directory citations. Nothing local, no editorial mentions, no community involvement signals.
The law firm SEO strategy
Step 1: Practice-area-specific GBP rebuild
We switched the primary GBP category to “Family law attorney” (the highest revenue practice area) and added six secondaries: “Divorce attorney,” “Child custody attorney,” “Estate planning attorney,” “Probate lawyer,” “Trusts and estates attorney,” and “Adoption attorney.”
According to the American Bar Association's 2024 Legal Tech Report, 38 percent of people seeking legal help start with a Google search, and 71 percent of those click a result on the first page. GBP category accuracy is one of the most under-utilized levers in legal SEO.
Step 2: Practice-area landing pages with real depth
We rebuilt the Practice Areas section as six dedicated pages. Each one was 1,400 to 1,800 words, structured around the questions a prospective client actually asks before booking a consultation:
- What does the process look like?
- How long does it typically take?
- What does it cost?
- What documents do I need to bring to the consultation?
- How is Sterling different from other firms?
Every page had LegalService schema, an embedded Google Map, attorney bios with Person schema, and a clear consultation CTA. Schema.org explicitly defines LegalService as a Service subtype, which lets Google parse the page as a clearly bounded legal offering.
Step 3: E-E-A-T signals through attorney content
Law is a YMYL (Your Money or Your Life) topic, which means Google's search quality guidelines weigh E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trust) more heavily. We made three changes:
Every blog post and practice-area page was bylined by a named attorney with a linked bio. Each attorney bio listed their bar admissions (Bar number, year admitted), education, notable cases, and speaking engagements. We added Person schema withjobTitle, worksFor, and alumniOf fields to reinforce entity identity.
We also added the firm to FindLaw, Avvo, Justia, and the local Mecklenburg County Bar directory, with consistent attorney names and bar numbers across every listing. Citation consistency carries extra weight in legal because Google cross- checks attorney credentials.
Step 4: Local content that built authority
I tested an angle most law firms ignore. Instead of generic legal blogs, we published Charlotte-specific content: “What North Carolina divorce filing looks like in Mecklenburg County,” “Probate timelines in NC: how long does it actually take,” and “Updated 2026 child support guidelines for North Carolina families.”
Six posts in the first quarter, each averaging 1,800 words, each with a clear attorney byline. These pieces earned natural backlinks from two Charlotte parenting blogs, a local news segment, and the regional Bar Association newsletter. None were bought. All were earned through specific, useful, locally relevant content.
The law firm SEO results, by the numbers
- Map pack rankings: Top 5 for 18 high-intent legal queries in Charlotte, including “divorce attorney Charlotte” and “estate planning lawyer near me.”
- Consultation calls: Doubled month-over-month by month 6, tracked via CallRail with separate numbers per practice area.
- Organic sessions: Up 312 percent in GA4.
- Cost per qualified lead: Down 54 percent compared to their previous Avvo Pro and Google Ads spend.
- Reviews: 51 new Google reviews in 6 months, 4.9-star average.
What this means for law firm owners
Here's the honest read. Law is one of the highest-CPC categories on Google. A single click on “divorce lawyer near me” can cost 35 to 80 dollars (Rs. 2,900 to 6,700) on the paid side. Organic local SEO is the most cost-effective long-term channel for legal clients, but only if you take the E-E-A-T side seriously.
Based on what I've seen across two law firm engagements, the single biggest mistake is treating attorney bios as filler content. Bios are E-E-A-T fuel. Bar numbers, education, notable cases, and Person schema turn a generic firm website into a Google-trusted entity.
Law firm SEO case study FAQ
How long does law firm SEO take to show results?
Legal is more competitive than most local-services niches. GBP visibility usually shows in 6 to 10 weeks. Practice-area-specific rankings for competitive city terms typically land between months 5 and 9. Sterling was a 6-month engagement because the firm had a strong offline reputation we could anchor the digital E-E-A-T to.
Should a multi-practice firm pick one focus area for SEO?
Lead with the highest-revenue practice area but build content for all of them. Sterling led with family law (highest case value) but had dedicated pages and content for estate planning and probate too. Google rewards depth on related topics, especially within YMYL verticals.
Are FindLaw and Avvo worth paying for?
Free FindLaw and Avvo profiles are worth claiming and optimizing because they pass citation consistency and occasional referral traffic. Paid Avvo Pro and FindLaw Premium placements can work for some firms, but the ROI varies wildly by market. Most firms get better long-term value investing the same budget into their own site's SEO than renting visibility on third-party platforms.
What is the biggest legal SEO mistake to avoid?
Treating attorney bios as throwaway content. In a YMYL category, the lawyer's verifiable credentials are E-E-A-T fuel for the entire site. Generic three-sentence bios cap your ranking ceiling. Full bios with bar admissions, education, notable cases, speaking engagements, and Person schema make every other page on the site rank better.
