Tandoor Co. opened in Austin with the chef from a respected New York Indian restaurant and a menu sharp enough to earn early local press. Six weeks after opening, the dining room was still half-empty Tuesday through Thursday. Search for “Indian restaurant Austin” surfaced three competitors before Tandoor showed up. Search for “restaurants near me” from inside the dining room? Tandoor was on page two.
Four months later, Tandoor sat in the local 3-pack top 3 for “best Indian restaurant near me” and 11 related queries. Walk-ins were up 50 percent. Weekend covers were 100 percent reserved with a 2-week booking lead time. This is the restaurant SEO case study with every move documented.
The challenge: a great restaurant Google did not know about
Three audit findings:
- GBP not fully built. Hours wrong, cuisine type missing, menu URL not set, no photos beyond the initial 4.
- Zero structured menu content on the website. Menu was a PDF download, which Google cannot parse for search results.
- Reviews scattered across Yelp, Google, OpenTable, TripAdvisor with inconsistent name. “Tandoor Co,” “Tandoor Company,” “Tandoor Co. Indian Kitchen.”
The restaurant SEO strategy
Step 1: GBP rebuild for restaurant intent
Primary category: Indian restaurant. Secondaries: “North Indian restaurant,” “Asian restaurant,” “Vegetarian restaurant,” “Family restaurant.” Menu URL pointed to the new HTML menu page (not the PDF). 38 high-quality photos of food, dining room, and chef added across 4 weeks.
We turned on every relevant attribute: outdoor seating, accepts reservations, vegetarian options, vegan options, gluten-free options, kid-friendly, dine-in, takeaway, delivery, catering. Google uses attribute tags as filtering signals when users refine searches.
Step 2: Menu and dish content with schema
We migrated the PDF menu into a real HTML menu page, each dish as a structured item with description, price, and dietary tags. Restaurant schema on the homepage and Menu schema on the menu page made dishes eligible for rich results.
We also built 4 long-form content pieces: “Best Indian restaurant Austin guide,” “What is real tandoor cooking,” “Vegetarian Indian dining in Austin,” and a chef bio piece with Person schema reinforcing authority.
Step 3: Review consolidation and growth
Standardized the business name to “Tandoor Co. Indian Kitchen” across every platform. Set up a QR-code review request on the bill that linked to Google reviews, with a short script asking diners to mention the dish they ordered and which Austin neighborhood they came from.
Over 4 months, Tandoor gained 142 new Google reviews with around 80 percent mentioning a specific dish (butter chicken, biryani, dal makhani, garlic naan). Joy Hawkins' Sterling Sky research has consistently shown reviews with dish-specific keywords help restaurants rank for food-type queries.
Step 4: Local food blog and press
We pitched the restaurant to local food bloggers and earned editorial coverage on three Austin food sites: Eater Austin, Austin360, and CultureMap Austin. None were paid. The chef's story (former NYC chef opening a Texas restaurant) was genuinely newsworthy and the pitches were tailored to each outlet.
Results, by the numbers
- Map pack top 3: “best tacos Austin” (a halo for the city) and “best Indian restaurant Austin,” plus 9 dish and cuisine queries.
- Walk-ins: Up 50 percent month over month by month 4.
- Weekend reservations: 100 percent reserved with a 2-week wait.
- Direction requests: Up 312 percent per GBP Insights.
Restaurant SEO FAQ
How long does restaurant SEO take to show results?
Most restaurants see GBP movement within 4 to 6 weeks when the profile is fully built out. Map pack rankings for competitive cuisine queries usually land between months 3 and 5.
Are Yelp and OpenTable reviews more important than Google reviews?
Google reviews carry the most direct ranking weight for the local 3-pack. Yelp and OpenTable matter for top-of-funnel discovery and platform-specific visibility. Diners cross-reference all three before choosing.
Does menu schema actually help rankings?
Menu and Restaurant schema can unlock rich results that show dish details and price right in search. The schema itself is not a direct ranking factor, but the click-through rate improvement from rich results can lift rankings indirectly through engagement signals.
How important are photos for restaurant SEO?
Critical. Google rewards photo-rich profiles with more impressions and engagement. Authentic food and dining room photos consistently outperform stock images. Most restaurants should upload 30 to 60 new photos in the first 60 days, then 4 to 8 fresh photos per month after that.
