AEO & GEO for Local SEO: Get Cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity & AI Overviews in 2026
AI search is quietly stealing local clicks. Here's how AEO and GEO work, and the steps that get your business cited inside ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews, not just buried in the blue links.
Prashant SharmaSomething changed in local search over the last year. People stopped scrolling ten blue links and started asking ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews things like “best dentist near me that takes my insurance” or “who fixes burst pipes in Tampa at night.” The AI answers in a paragraph, names a few businesses, and the search is over. If you're not one of those named businesses, you never existed.
This is where AEO and GEO come in. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) are how local businesses earn a spot inside those AI answers. The good news: they build directly on the local SEO work you're probably already doing.
What AEO and GEO actually mean
Let me keep this simple, because the jargon makes it sound harder than it is.
- AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is optimizing your content so it directly answers the questions people ask. Think clear questions and clean answers that an AI can lift and quote.
- GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the broader practice of getting your brand mentioned and cited across the web so generative engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews) pull you into their answers.
Here's the thing: traditional SEO gets you ranked. AEO and GEO get you quoted. Those are different games, and local businesses that play both win twice.
Why this matters for local businesses right now
Google rolled AI Overviews out widely, and they now appear above the regular results for a large share of searches. Research from Pew Research Center in 2025 found that when an AI summary appears, people click through to websites far less often. The answer becomes the destination.
For a local business, that's both a threat and an opening. The threat: fewer clicks to your site. The opening: if the AI names you in its answer, you get the recommendation without the customer ever comparing you to five competitors. Based on what I've seen, being the cited business is worth more than ranking fourth in the old blue links.
Step 1: Write content the way people ask questions
AI answers love content that mirrors real questions. Go into your Google Business Profile Q&A, your reviews, and tools like AlsoAsked or AnswerThePublic, and collect the actual phrasing customers use.
Then structure your pages around them:
- Use the real question as a heading (H2 or H3).
- Answer it in the first one or two sentences, before any fluff.
- Keep each answer self-contained, so it makes sense quoted on its own.
This is the heart of AEO. An answer engine can't quote you if your answer is buried in paragraph six.
Step 2: Add FAQ and LocalBusiness schema
Structured data is how you hand machines a clean, labeled version of your information. FAQPage schema marks up your questions and answers. LocalBusiness schema confirms your name, address, phone, hours and service area.
Google and other engines use Schema.org markup to understand entities with confidence. You can generate valid LocalBusiness JSON-LD with our free schema generator tool and paste it straight into your site.
Step 3: Build entity consistency everywhere
Generative engines trust businesses they see described consistently across many sources. This is the GEO half of the work, and it overlaps heavily with classic local SEO:
- Identical name, address and phone across every directory and listing.
- A complete, active Google Business Profile.
- Reviews on multiple platforms that describe what you do and where.
- Mentions on local sites, news, and industry directories.
Every consistent mention is another vote that tells an AI “this business is real, and this is what it does.”
Step 4: Earn citations on the sources AI reads
Perplexity and ChatGPT's web search lean on sources they consider trustworthy: established directories, review platforms, local publications and Reddit threads. Getting mentioned in those places makes you a candidate for citation.
For a local business, that means showing up in “best [service] in [city]” roundup articles, being active on the review sites your industry uses, and earning genuine local press. You can't fake your way into these, but you can earn your way in.
Step 5: Track whether AI engines mention you
You can't improve what you don't measure. Periodically ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews the questions your customers ask (“best [your service] in [your city]”) and note whether you're named. This isn't a perfect science yet, and results shift, but it tells you where you stand and where the gaps are.
How AEO and GEO fit with regular local SEO
Don't think of these as a replacement. Think of them as a layer on top. The same foundations (a strong Google Business Profile, consistent citations, real reviews, clean schema) power both your map pack ranking and your AI visibility. You're mostly repackaging work you should already be doing so machines can read and quote it.
If you want help, this is exactly what our Answer Engine Optimization service and AI search optimization for ChatGPT & Gemini cover.
What this means for you
AI search isn't coming, it's already here, and for local businesses it rewards the same fundamentals with a fresh coat of structure on top. Answer real questions clearly, mark everything up with schema, stay consistent across the web, and earn mentions on the sources AI trusts. Do that and you stop fighting for clicks and start being the answer.
AEO and GEO local SEO FAQ
What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
AEO optimizes your content to directly answer questions so engines can quote it. GEO is the broader work of getting your brand mentioned and cited across the web so generative engines pull you into their answers.
Does AEO replace traditional local SEO?
No. It builds on it. The same Google Business Profile, citations, reviews and schema that drive map pack rankings also power your visibility in AI answers.
How do I get my business mentioned by ChatGPT or Perplexity?
Answer customer questions clearly on your site, add FAQ and LocalBusiness schema, keep your details consistent everywhere, and earn mentions on directories, review sites and local publications that AI engines treat as trusted sources.
Is schema markup required for AI search?
It isn't strictly required, but it helps a lot. Clean LocalBusiness and FAQPage schema gives engines a confident, labeled version of your information, which makes you easier to cite accurately.
